Police begin crackdown against vehicles without number plates

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Olatunji Disu, has ordered enforcement action against vehicles without plate numbers. Same goes for those with altered or covered number plates.

Also, Disu ordered the deployment of Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, DIGs, to all six geopolitical zones of Nigeria.

Disu issued the directives on Tuesday during the monthly strategic conference with senior police officers at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

According to the IGP, the deployment of DIGs will take effect from June 15, and is aimed at improving supervision, operational coordination, and accountability across all policing formations nationwide.

He said the reform is intended to bring strategic leadership closer to field operations and improve rapid response to emerging threats.

The IGP also directed an immediate nationwide enforcement operation against vehicles operating without registration plates or with concealed, defaced, or altered number plates, warning that such practices will no longer be tolerated.

Oyo kidnapped schoolchildren

Disu also disclosed that the Police and other security agencies are making progress over efforts to rescue the abducted Oyo School children and teachers noting, “The full operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force, in coordination with other security agencies, is fully committed to securing their safe return.”

Emphasizing that the rescue of the abducted schoolchildren in Oyo State is an ongoing national security operation, he assured that the Force is working in collaboration with sister security agencies to secure their release.

Speaking on operational breakthroughs since the last strategic meeting on May 5, Disu said: “The Force rescued 88 kidnapped victims, arrested 29 murder suspects for homicide; 65 suspects were arrested for armed robbery, while 55 suspects were arrested for kidnapping offences.

He added that eight terrorists were arrested, 42 suspects arrested for cult-related offences, 114 firearms recovered, 843 ammunition rounds and 28 stolen vehicles recovered.

The IGP also highlighted a recent intelligence-driven operation in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, where five suspected kidnappers were arrested before they could carry out planned attacks in Abuja.

He described the operation as evidence of improved intelligence gathering and proactive policing strategies.

To prevent criminals from exploiting jurisdictional boundaries, Disu ordered Commissioners of Police to establish coordinated “Handshake Patrols” between neighbouring states.

He directed enhanced surveillance along major entry and exit routes, improved intelligence sharing, and joint operational responses where necessary.
