NYSC blacklists 3 LGAs Kebbi, to relocate orientation camp

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has blacklisted three LGAs in Kebbi state from the posting of corps members over security concerns.

The scheme has also requested the relocation of its orientation camp from Dakingari, its current location, to safer parts of the state.

Bala Kagarko, NYSC coordinator in Kebbi, spoke on Tuesday during an interview with journalists at the temporary orientation camp in Basura, Jega LGA.

Kagarko said rising insecurity has led to a drastic reduction in the number of corps members posted to the state.

“For the safety of corps members, we are no longer posting them to Augie, Arewa and Sakaba local government areas of the state,” he said.

“We no longer have enough doctors to post to state hospitals, and there are not enough corps members to deploy to schools and other areas where they are needed to contribute to development.

“Kebbi now has the least number of corps members in the country. Several appeals have been made to the appropriate authorities, but we are yet to receive a response.”

The development comes amid a resurgence of banditry and terrorist attacks in parts of the country.

Last week, suspected Lakurawa insurgents reportedly killed at least 20 people in Fasken Rafi, a village in Arewa LGA, one of the areas blacklisted by the NYSC.

According to The Punch, the Kebbi state government described the attack as tragic and extended condolences to the families of the victims and residents of the affected community.

Umar Tafida, deputy governor of Kebbi, who led a government delegation to the area on Saturday, said the state remains committed to tackling insecurity and protecting lives and property.
