Riyad Mahrez announces retirement after Algeria’s World Cup elimination

Riyad Mahrez, Algeria captain, has announced his retirement from international football following his country’s exit from the FIFA World Cup.

Algeria was knocked out in the Round of 32 after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland on Thursday, bringing an end to Mahrez’s international career.

Speaking after the match, the 35-year-old reflected on his journey with the national team.

“There were good times and difficult times as well, of course. That’s part of a career,” he said afterward.

“But representing Algeria has been a dream of mine ever since I was young, to play for my country. It’s been an immense honor and a great source of pride.”

He added, “It is the new generation’s turn to play.”

Mahrez acknowledged Algeria’s supporters as he left the pitch, giving a thumbs-up before patting his heart and waving to the fans.

The forward, who currently plays for Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia, enjoyed a distinguished international career, making 119 appearances for Algeria and scoring 40 goals, both the second-highest totals in the nation’s history.

Mahrez had played a pivotal role in Algeria’s run to the knockout stage, scoring twice and providing an assist in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Austria during the group stage.

He was also a key member of the Algeria squad that won the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Mahrez had at the club level won five Premier League titles—one with Leicester City and four with Manchester City—while also lifting the UEFA Champions League trophy during his time at City.
