Viral Video:Abia Police arrest woman over attempt to Kill 12-year-old Niece in Umuahia

The Abia State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old woman, Mrs. Nwoko Gift, for allegedly attempting to kill her 12-year-old niece, following a viral video that sparked outrage on social media.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, the Command confirmed that the suspect, an indigene of Ehimembano, Imo State, who resides at IBB Housing Estate, Umuahia, has been taken into custody, while investigations into the incident are ongoing.

According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly attempted to stab her niece, Miss Ebo Chimamanda, with a kitchen knife on July 5, 2026, after the young girl reportedly failed to spread clothes as instructed before the suspect left for the market.

The police further disclosed that investigations indicate the victim, who lives with the suspect, had allegedly been subjected to repeated physical abuse and threats to her life prior to the incident.

Acting on actionable intelligence, operatives attached to the World Bank Divisional Police Headquarters, Umuahia, swiftly responded to the scene, rescued the minor, arrested the suspect, and recovered the kitchen knife allegedly used in the attack.

The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.

The Command stated that upon the conclusion of investigations, the suspect will be charged to court for attempted murder.

Condemning the incident, the Abia State Police Command warned against all forms of violence and abuse, particularly against children, and urged members of the public to promptly report similar cases to the nearest police station.
