Ambassador Ikpeazu meets federation of Nigerian communities in Spain, reinforces citizen-centred diplomacy

In furtherance of the Federal Government’s commitment to citizen-centred diplomacy and improved consular service delivery, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Madrid on Sunday hosted the Executive Committee of the Federation of Nigerian Communities in Spain (FNCS) in a high-level engagement aimed at strengthening collaboration between the Mission and the Nigerian community across Spain.

The meeting, which commenced at 2:00 p.m. at the Nigerian Embassy in Madrid, provided an important platform for familiarization and constructive dialogue between the Embassy and the umbrella body representing Nigerians resident in various regions of Spain.

The FNCS delegation was led by its President, Hon Jackson Dame Oboh, who was accompanied by members of the federation’s executive committee. The visit afforded the opportunity to exchange views on issues affecting Nigerians in Spain and to explore practical measures for improving consular services and community engagement.

Welcoming the delegation, Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain, His Excellency Ambassador Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, PhD, reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to implementing the citizen-centred foreign policy of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu , emphasizing that the welfare, protection, and effective representation of Nigerians abroad remain at the heart of the Mission’s priorities.

Ikpeazu stated that the Embassy is committed to building a closer relationship with the Nigerian community and ensuring that its programmes and policies respond to the genuine needs and aspirations of citizens living in Spain.

The meeting provided an opportunity for community leaders to highlight some of the most pressing concerns confronting Nigerians across different autonomous communities in Spain. Among the key issues raised was the need for the restoration of direct flight connectivity between Nigeria and Spain, which participants noted would significantly improve travel, facilitate business and investment, strengthen tourism, and enhance people-to-people exchanges between both countries.

Responding to the concerns, Ikpeazu assured the delegation that the Embassy would continue to engage relevant authorities and stakeholders in pursuit of initiatives that advance the interests of Nigerians in Spain while strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and the Kingdom of Spain.

As part of ongoing institutional reforms, the former Abia state Governor and Ambassador announced plans by the Embassy to undertake a comprehensive digitalization of data relating to Nigerians resident in Spain. According to him, the initiative will establish a modern database that will enable the Mission to respond more efficiently to consular requests, improve communication with citizens, and provide faster, more effective services when required.

He further disclosed that the Embassy will introduce Total Quality Management (TQM) principles across its service delivery points as part of efforts to improve operational efficiency, accountability, responsiveness, and overall service standards.

According to Ikpeazu, the adoption of internationally recognised quality management practices will help reposition the Mission to deliver more professional, transparent, and results-oriented consular services that meet the expectations of Nigerians and other stakeholders.

The Nigerian Ambassador also charged leaders of the Federation of Nigerian Communities in Spain to continue serving as worthy ambassadors of Nigeria by upholding the country’s values and maintaining exemplary conduct within their host communities.

He urged Nigerians resident in Spain to remain law-abiding, respect the laws and institutions of their host country, and contribute positively to the development of their communities, stressing that responsible conduct strengthens Nigeria’s image abroad and fosters greater mutual respect between both countries.

Ikpeazu further encouraged community leaders to provide selfless and inclusive leadership, noting that genuine service to fellow Nigerians is built on integrity, accountability, and a commitment to the collective good.

“As leaders of our communities, you carry the responsibility of representing not only your respective organisations but also the image of Nigeria. Lead selflessly, obey the laws of your host country, promote unity among our people, and continue to earn the respect and confidence of those you represent through integrity, humility, and dedicated service.”

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to institutionalise regular consultations between the Embassy and the Federation of Nigerian Communities in Spain, with both sides expressing optimism that closer collaboration would enhance the welfare of Nigerians in Spain and further strengthen the relationship between the Embassy and the diaspora community.
