Benue: PDP condemns destruction of billboards

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has expressed dissatisfaction over alleged deliberate destruction and removal of campaign billboards belonging to its senatorial candidate for Benue Northwest, Dr Eunice Ortom, at Naka in Gwer West Local Government, (LGA) of the state.

The party, in a statement by the State Publicity Secretary, Bright Antyo, observed that political campaigns should be a period for citizens to listen to competing ideas, examine policy proposals and make informed choices about the leadership they want.

It said: “The destruction of campaign materials is not only an attack on political expression but also a disturbing reflection of the intolerance that continues to undermine our democratic process.

“PDP calls on all political actors, supporters and campaign organisations to reject acts of vandalism, provocation, intimidation and political violence.”

The party advised that no political party or candidate should seek electoral advantage by silencing an opponent or destroying legitimate campaign materials.

Rather than engaging in the politics of destruction, the PDP urged all candidates to embrace issue-based campaigns, “Let the people hear clear and practical positions on security, education, healthcare, employment, infrastructure, agriculture, economic development and other issues that directly affect their lives.

“Elections should not be a contest of who can insult, intimidate or destroy the most. It should be a contest of ideas, competence, character, vision and credible solutions.”

PDP also called on the government, relevant security agencies and electoral authorities to, vehemently, discourage any form of lawlessness and unnecessary disorders as campaign heightens.

The party expressed confidence that “Our democracy is stronger when political differences are settled through dialogue, persuasion and the ballot box, not vandalism and intimidation.”

Benue PDP further appealed to all political parties and their supporters in the state to conduct their campaigns with restraint, respect and responsibility.
