Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, on Wednesday humorously appealed to leaders of the All Progressives Congress, APC, to carry members of the National Assembly along while submitting candidates’ names to INEC ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to Akpabio, many senators are already “having high blood pressure” over fears surrounding the outcome of the recent primaries.

He spoke at the inauguration of the National Campaign Council for the Ekiti State Governorship Election in Abuja.

Behind the laughter generated by Akpabio’s remarks were growing concerns over how the ruling party intends to manage expectations ahead of the 2027 elections.

There are indications that some members who feel shortchanged by the final list of candidates may decide to abandon the party.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio is the Co-Chairman of the Ekiti State Campaign Council.

However, APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, and Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, expressed confidence in the party’s chances, insisting that the Ekiti governorship election is already a done deal.

The Ekiti Governorship Election will hold on June 20, 2026, with the ruling APC hoping to significantly improve on the 187,557 votes secured by Governor Biodun Oyebanji in the 2022 election.
